What Is Power Line Communications?

Power Line Communications (PLC) is the ability to use the existing power line infrastructure, either within a building or on the distribution grid, to send and receive data for the purposes of communications.

PLC is typically used to enable communications to electronic devices, such as appliances, utility meters, lighting control systems, heating ventilation and air conditioning units, and virtually any device that is connected to power. In addition, PLC can be used to enable the "last mile" communication, from the pole-top to a residence.

Given the ability to communicate reliably in these situations, there are great opportunities and potential for convenience and cost-saving applications.
